Using a Colocation Facility to Ensure Reliability

One typical concern for VoIP Service Providers who are just starting out in the industry is reliability. This is why I recommend that our clients place their equipment in a colocation facility.

A colocation company is a great resource for customers who want to locate their servers, gateways and network in a secure place. Colocation companies also known as “colo”, provide customers with internet service and rental server service.

The majority of the colocation’s customers are telecommunications companies, B2B e-commerce companies and Enterprises that use collocation as data backup for unexpected disasters. Telecommunication companies cannot afford getting their system hardware damaged because that will mean complete down time for their 24/7 live service and a huge monetary loss for the business. This is the reason why more and more customers identify the importance of having their business system’s protected and the best way to do so is by using Colocation service.

It is characteristic of a Colocation to offer the following:

Security – The Colocation physical location is a place that is always guarded by security 24/7. Customers will need to be escorted to access to their servers, customers will be provided with a laser card to identify themselves when accessing into the building, and in some cases there will be fingerprint or voice recognition.

Power loss prevention – Colocation companies will always have generators in case of a blackout. The generators will immediately have to be turned on if there is a failure with the main power system. While this process is taking place a colocation will make use of battery back ups.

Adequate Room Temperature – Colocation companies will have cooling equipment available because they need to ensure the servers remain at an adequate temperature so they do not burn out. To help predict a fire incident the colocation facility will have fire sprinklers and smoke detectors in every sector of the building.

Connections – Colocation companies also offer the opportunity for their customers to network.

In order to ensure a Colocation company follows the procedures and standard levels of reliability they are often audited. Using a Colocation service is a great option to help ease your mind. It is securing the heart of your business, your server, redundant servers, data or your network.

If you don’t currently work with a colocation, your Account Manager can refer you to a company that we can recommend.
